What are the Benefits of In-Ear or Earphone Monitors?

Conventional monitoring is achieved with bulky, heavy floor wedges placed onstage. In-ear-monitoring provides a more pleasant and precise way of monitoring:

SOUND QUALITY: When you’re in-ear you can enjoy a clear mix at lower volume (which will reduce the risk of hearing loss) high-fidelity sound and less disruptions from outside noise. Also, your audience will enjoy a better sounding show by eliminating feedback and loud stage noise, often resulting from booming floor wedges that pick up sound from on-stage microphones.

MOBILITY: Floor wedges are stationary and their sound is focused in only one place and direction. In-Ear monitors rest comfortably in your ears and allow you to go anywhere, on or off-stage, and hear yourself clearly.

PORTABILITY: Floor wedges are heavy and bulky while the entire monitoring system can fit in a case that you can easily lift with one hand. The in-ears themselves would fit in your pocket and can be used for personal listening while traveling or wherever you like.

Generic earplugs and earpieces can work well for some if used properly, but are they comfortable? Many of us have either small or sensitive ear canals and others have canals with sharp bends. Generic earplugs are designed for the masses but they are not comfortable or don't stay in place for many. That's why Selective Sounds specializes in custom earpieces. We take an impression of your ear and then custom build whatever product you need. The custom products are designed to be comfortable so they can be worn for long periods of time while staying in place.

- O U R P R O C E S S -

Step 1
Make an appointment to either come into the office or you can make arrangements for us to come to your location for a small fee.

Step 2
Your ears will be examined for obstructions as well as deformities/surgeries that could affect the impressions. If there are any obstructions they must be removed before impressions can be taken. You will be referred to your medical provider or instructed how to use an at home kit.

Step 3
A cotton dam will be inserted into your ear to protect the eardrum. This process often tickles slightly.

Step 4
Some will require a dental block. It's a small piece placed between the top and bottom teeth that allows the jaw to rest in a slightly open position. This is mostly used for performing musicians.

Step 5
The impression material is pumped into the ear by the “impression gun” (similar to a caulking gun except with materials designed for the ears).

Step 6
The material takes 3-5 minutes to harden up and then is removed. That’s it!

From start to finish most are done in 15-30 minutes depending on how many questions you may have. Whether you have many questions or no questions at all, our goal is for you to be satisfied with your product.
